Garland, Texas – CWEB News confirms that Matt Lee Johnson, 38, is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on May 20, 2025, exactly 13 years after the horrific murder of 63-year-old Nancy Judith Harris, a beloved grandmother and convenience store clerk in Garland, Texas.
The Crime: A Shocking Act of Violence
On May 20, 2012, Johnson entered the Fina Whip-In convenience store at 3405 Broadway Boulevard, where Harris was working alone. Surveillance footage obtained by CWEB News shows Johnson robbing her of cash, coins, her wedding ring, and two packs of cigarettes. After emptying the register, Johnson doused Harris in lighter fluid and set her on fire.
The horrifying video shows Harris running to a sink in a desperate attempt to extinguish the flames before collapsing outside the store. Bystanders and first responders rushed to her aid.
Harris sustained second- to fourth-degree burns over 40% of her body, including her face, chest, and limbs. She was placed on life support but succumbed to her injuries five days later, on May 25, 2012.
Remembering Nancy Harris: A Life Cut Short
Described by her family as a loving grandmother, devout Christian, and lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, Harris was deeply committed to her family and community.
“She lived for her grandchildren,” a family member told CWEB News. “Her loss left a hole in our hearts that will never heal.”
Justice and Closure After 13 Years
Johnson never denied his actions and expressed remorse through his attorney. However, prosecutors emphasized the deliberate and cruel nature of the crime, noting that Johnson had stolen lighters from the store before igniting the victim, an act of premeditated brutality.
According to CWEB News sources, Harris’s family members plan to attend the execution, hoping to gain a measure of justice and closure after more than a decade of grief.
Capital Punishment Debate Rekindled
The case has reignited debate over the death penalty in Texas, the U.S. state with the highest number of executions. Advocates for capital punishment argue that Johnson’s execution is a necessary step toward justice, while critics continue to question the ethics and effectiveness of the system.
As the date approaches, May 20, 2025, marks both a tragic anniversary and a moment of reckoning for a grieving family—and for a justice system faced with balancing punishment and humanity.
