CWEB News Reports: Eight Injured in Suspected Terror Attack on Israeli Hostage Rally in Colorado

BOULDER, CO — CWEB News – Eight people were injured Sunday afternoon in what federal authorities are investigating as a targeted terror attack during a peaceful rally advocating for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. The incident occurred just before 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of 13th Street and Pearl Street in downtown Boulder, Colorado.

According to law enforcement, the suspect, identified by the FBI as 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman, allegedly deployed a makeshift flamethrower and threw an incendiary device into the crowd gathered for the “Run for Their Lives” event. Witnesses and FBI officials report that Soliman shouted “Free Palestine” during the attack.

Police responded quickly to calls reporting a man with a weapon and individuals on fire. Emergency crews treated multiple victims for burn injuries on the scene. Four people were transported to Boulder Community Hospital, while two others, suffering more severe burns, were airlifted to a specialized burn center in Aurora. One person remains in serious condition; others are expected to recover.

Soliman was arrested without resistance and later transported to a hospital for evaluation, according to police.

Federal Authorities: “Ideologically Motivated Violence”

While the investigation remains ongoing, FBI officials confirmed the attack is being treated as an act of ideologically motivated violence.

“This is being investigated as a targeted terror attack,” said one FBI official. “Early evidence and witness accounts suggest political and ideological motivation behind the act.”

Organizers Condemn the Attack as ‘Horrifying’

The rally was part of the international “Run for Their Lives” campaign—weekly solidarity marches advocating for the release of hostages held in Gaza, many since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks.

Ari Schaffer, founder of Greater Hartford for Israel and a leader of the campaign’s West Hartford chapter, released the following statement:

“It is horrifying that in today’s America, there are individuals so hateful they are willing to commit acts of violence against a peaceful rally for hostages held captive for over 600 days by the terror organization Hamas. Every week, 100 of us march peacefully here in West Hartford and around the world. And every week, we wonder: will this be the one when someone tries to silence us violently?”

Context and Upcoming Events

This incident follows last month’s fatal shooting of two Israeli Embassy staffers in Washington, D.C., which federal officials also labeled an act of terrorism.

The West Hartford chapter of “Run for Their Lives” plans to hold its first-anniversary march next Sunday and welcomes press coverage. Due to the upcoming Shavuot holiday, organizers stated they will be unavailable for comment until Tuesday evening.

The Boulder Police Department, the FBI, and the ATF are continuing the investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
