Boar’s Head Provisions Co. Inc. has expanded its July 26 recall of deli meat products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the expanded recall on July 30 as Boar’s Head products may contain Listeria monocytogenes. The microorganism causes listeriosis, a severe and sometimes fatal infection in vulnerable groups.
The expanded recall by Boar’s Head includes 71 products under the brand names of both Boar’s Head and Old Country. These meat and poultry products were produced between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024. The products have sell-by dates from 29-JUL-2024 through 17-OCT-24.
The recalled products have been distributed throughout the nation through retail outlets. They have also been exported to Mexico, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and the Cayman Islands, with EST.12612 or P-12612 establishment numbers. These numbers are found inside the USDA mark of inspection that is present on the product labels.
The Maryland Department of Health and the Baltimore City Health Department collected an unopened sample of liverwurst product produced by Boar’s Head. It was tested after an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infection. The sample tested positive.
FSIS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have collaborated on the investigation. As of July 30, 2024, 34 sick people had been identified with L. monocytogenes infections, and the investigation is ongoing.
The investigation shows that there have been 33 hospitalizations in 13 states. Two patients have died. Listeriosis can cause a severe infection in risk groups, including pregnant people, those aged 65 years or older, and those with weak immune systems.
Some symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, and stiff neck. Other symptoms include confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Some patients also have diarrhea or gastrointestinal symptoms.
Listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics. Risk groups and others who face such symptoms within two months of eating contaminated foods must inform healthcare providers that they have eaten contaminated foods. All web fans are urged to return or throw away products with the referenced dates and thoroughly clean their refrigerators.
