Microsoft (MSFT) bought Activision Blizzard in October 2023 for more than $75 billion. During the acquisition hearings, there was an accidental leak of Microsoft documents. The documents revealed that the Redmond, Washington, tech giant was developing a new Xbox X controller with the codename Sebile. It has been patented and can be seen in the latest patent filing by the software and hardware company.
Tech4Gamers and Windows Central were the first among many to report that they had seen the patents filed by Microsoft that listed the new features, including haptic feedback, in patents filed as recently as December.
According to the patents, the Sebile controller has direct-to-cloud connectivity. It has unique grips that resemble trousers, and this design has been made for ergonomic reasons. The grips also reportedly contain new haptic motors directing “high definition” impulses.
The patent also says pulses and vibrations can mimic many sounds and motions. They can also move independently of the controller’s housing. Backward compatibility ensures developers can make their games work on the new controller.
Connecting to the cloud through Wi-Fi bypassing Bluetooth adds milliseconds and makes a difference for gamers playing games on the cloud.
Other features include Bluetooth 5.2 and new modular thumb sticks. Sebile will also have replaceable and rechargeable batteries.
Although the patent is confirmed, Microsoft has not mentioned an upcoming launch date. So, gaming fans might have to wait till the tech giant introduces the following range of Xbox hardware. There is also no indication about the price of the new Xbox controller.
Another leak of documents during the hearings was of an Xbox handheld device. This might be launched in 2025, according to rumors. Microsoft has not commented on the matter. It has neither confirmed nor denied that the tech giant will launch a handheld Xbox though the possibility of using such a device has excited many web fans.
