Meta Refuses to Sign EU’s AI Code, Citing Legal Concerns
In a major development reported by CWEB News, Meta has become the first Big Tech company to reject the European Union’s voluntary AI code of practice, setting the stage for a potential clash with regulators. While competitors like OpenAI, Mistral, and Microsoft have agreed to comply, Meta argues that the EU’s guidelines overreach the AI Act’s legal framework.
Why Meta’s Decision Matters
The EU AI code of practice, introduced as a precursor to the bloc’s binding AI Act, requires tech companies to:
✔ Disclose AI training data sources
✔ Avoid copyrighted or pirated content in AI models
✔ Implement strict risk management protocols
However, in a LinkedIn post, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan criticized the rules for creating “legal uncertainties” and exceeding the AI Act’s scope.
Tech Industry Pushback Against EU AI Rules
CWEB News has learned that around 40 companies, including Google (Alphabet) and Meta, have lobbied the EU to delay the August 2, 2025, deadline. Despite this, EU officials remain firm on enforcing the regulations.
A Growing Trend: US Tech vs. EU Regulation
This standoff follows years of tension between US tech giants (Apple, Amazon, Meta, Google) and EU regulators, who have imposed stricter privacy laws, antitrust fines, and digital market rules. Meta’s refusal signals a potential legal battle ahead.
