In a significant move to dismantle barriers in healthcare access, Amazon is installing automated prescription kiosks, dubbed Amazon Pharmacy Kiosks, directly inside One Medical clinics.
This initiative marks a pivotal evolution from its same-day delivery service, positioning the tech giant to capture the crucial point-of-care moment. The program is slated for a December launch, beginning with select One Medical locations in the Los Angeles area, with a strategic expansion planned for other markets shortly thereafter.
The core objective of this venture is to address the pervasive issue of prescription abandonment, where patients fail to collect their medications after a doctor’s visit. Amazon’s strategy is to integrate pharmacy access seamlessly into the clinical experience.
By allowing patients to receive common medications like antibiotics, inhalers, and blood pressure drugs within minutes of their appointment, the company aims to ensure treatments are started immediately, thereby improving health outcomes and providing clinicians with greater certainty that their care plans will be followed.
For patients, the process is designed for ultimate convenience. Immediately after a consultation, a patient can request pickup via the Amazon app. The system will display all upfront costs and insurance deductions before checkout, ensuring price transparency.
While the service requires a pre-existing Amazon Pharmacy account and an in-person visit to a participating clinic, it comes with no additional fees. To support this new model, patients also have the ability to connect directly with an Amazon Pharmacy pharmacist through the app for video or phone consultations, offering an added layer of guidance. It is important to note that controlled substances and refrigerated medications will not be available from these kiosks.
This innovation is a key component of Amazon’s broader subscription healthcare ecosystem. While access to the kiosks currently requires an in-person One Medical appointment, the service is available to all Amazon Pharmacy customers, not just Prime members.
This rollout further solidifies Amazon’s integrated health offering, which includes One Medical memberships—priced at $99 annually for Prime subscribers—and virtual care options, as it continues its ambitious push to redefine the patient experience from diagnosis to treatment.
