These new fraudulent accounts vary from the earlier case in that they were made for people who were not Wells Fargo clients. Employees of the company created new accounts for current clients during the prior controversy.
This was referred to by NBC as “synthetic identity fraud — when impostors create new identities using a combination of real and fake personal information, such as names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, and driver’s license numbers.” This method of money laundering, financing terrorists, or defrauding financial institutions and governmental organizations

Between 2002 and 2016, Wells Fargo acknowledged that its staff had opened millions of fictitious accounts for its clients. When it reached a settlement with the US government in 2022, the firm agreed to push its staff to achieve it by setting irrational sales goals. A $3 billion fine was paid by the bank to resolve the issue.
According to a plan the FDIC released in May of 2023, banks with total assets exceeding $50 billion would pay more than 95% of a special fee intended to make up a $15.8 billion blow to the Deposit Insurance Fund of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. after numerous bank failures.

It may take up to 10 days to complete the clearing process for a deposit. You are technically using credit while the deposit is pending. Take the time to study your account agreement for information on the holds that apply to your deposits because banks are required to provide clients with written notice of hold periods.
If you deposited a check, contact the person who gave it to you and ask for copies of the front and back. When you speak with the bank, provide them with a copy of the voided check and the receipt.
You might need to seek legal counsel to address the situation if you made a cash deposit and the bank refuses to accept the receipt.
