Courtney Williams capped a season-high 28-point performance by draining a jumper with 18.1 seconds to play, lifting the visiting Chicago Sky to an 89-87 victory over the Indiana Fever on Sunday in Indianapolis.
Williams made 12 of 17 shots from the floor — including 4 of 5 from 3-point range — to continue her strong play during the Sky’s three-game winning streak. She erupted for 21 points in Chicago’s 80-63 victory over Los Angeles on Wednesday and recorded her first career triple-double two nights later in an 86-78 win over the Sparks.
Elizabeth Williams collected 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists and Marina Mabrey added 17 points for the Sky (8-9), who were guided by Emre Vatansever. He served as the interim coach one day after James Wade abruptly left his roles as head coach and general manager of the team to become an assistant with the Toronto Raptors.
Kahleah Copper scored 15 points for Chicago, which shot 50 percent from the floor (34 of 68) and 42.9 percent from 3-point range (12 of 28).
Indiana’s NaLyssa Smith recorded 27 points and eight rebounds and Kelsey Mitchell added 26 points and eight assists.
Top overall pick Aliyah Boston was limited to just four points for the Fever (5-11), who have lost four in a row overall and fell to 1-5 at home on the season.
Smith made a basket on the interior and a 3-pointer to forge a tie at 87-87 before Williams sank a jumper. Maya Caldwell’s bid to respond from 3-point range was off the mark, as was Mitchell’s last-second shot from beyond the arc.
Chicago extended its seven-point lead at halftime to 14 points at 68-54 quickly in the third quarter, highlighted by 3-pointers from both Copper and Mabrey. Indiana answered with a 20-6 run to forge a tie with 6:43 left in the fourth quarter, capped by Mitchell scoring from the interior and adding a 3-pointer on the next possession.
Mabrey drained a 3-pointer to extend the Sky’s lead to 48-40 before Grace Berger responded in kind on the Fever’s ensuing possession. Courtney Williams made a layup for Chicago, which held a 54-47 advantage at halftime after Elizabeth Williams tipped home a shot just before the buzzer.
