On Monday, a Tesla sedan was reported to have crashed off a cliff in northern California near Devil’s Slide. According to authorities, a California man purposefully drove his Tesla off a 250-foot cliff in an attempt to kill his family. California radiologist Dharmesh A. Patel, who was at the wheel, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and child abuse after the car careened off a treacherous cliff. His wife and two children were inside the vehicle with him.
The two adults and their children, a 4-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, survived after their car fell 250 feet over a cliff in California, according to authorities. The ‘driving mode’ of the Tesla at the time of the crash was unknown. Later that day, Brian Pottenger, a battalion chief for Coastside Fire Protection District/Cal Fire, said in a video update that the car “flipped several times” before landing on its wheels wedged against the cliff just a few feet from the surf.
Pottenger stated that when they first arrived, authorities had no idea how many people were inside, but they could see “movement in the front seat.” The incident evolved from what was most likely a body recovery to a rescue operation that lasted several hours amid constant rain, strong winds, slick roads, and crashing waves.
Firefighters rappelled down the cliff to rescue the two children and a helicopter crew rescued the two adults from the vehicle. Because the Tesla’s doors were smashed against the cliff and jammed shut, firefighters were forced to use “jaws of life” tools to extract the victims. Crews pulled the children out from the back window and carried them up the cliff in a rescue basket using the rope system. They were transported to the hospital by ambulance to be treated for musculoskeletal injuries.
Pottenger described the children’s injuries as moderate. He stated that surviving such a steep fall was “very, very rare,” and that the children’s car seats may have saved their lives. “We were actually shocked when we discovered survivable victims in the vehicle. So that was a hopeful moment for us,” Pottenger explained.
According to Officer Andrew Barclay of the Golden Gate Division of the California Highway Patrol, Patel will be charged with three counts of attempted murder and two counts of child abuse.
