July 4th Cookies with Patriotic Frosting Design

Ingredients

For the Cookies:
– 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
– 1 teaspoon baking soda
– ½ teaspoon baking powder
– 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
– 1 ½ cups white sugar
– 1 egg
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
– 3 tablespoons milk

For the Frosting:
– 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
– 4 cups powdered sugar
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 2-3 tablespoons milk
– Red and blue food coloring
– Star-shaped sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

Cookies:
1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Add milk to the dough, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough is soft, but not too wet.
4. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place them onto the prepared baking sheet.
5. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let cool on the baking sheet for a couple of minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting:
1. In a large bowl, beat the butter until creamy.
2. Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed and scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl often.
3. Add the vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of milk. Beat at high speed until the frosting is light and fluffy. If the frosting is too stiff, add an additional tablespoon of milk.
4. Divide the frosting into three bowls. Leave one bowl white. In the second bowl, add a few drops of red food coloring and mix until you reach your desired shade. In the third bowl, add a few drops of blue food coloring and mix until you reach your desired shade.

Decorating:
1. Once the cookies are completely cooled, frost them with the white frosting.
2. Use a piping bag or a plastic bag with a corner snipped off to pipe red and blue stripes or stars onto the cookies.
3. Add star-shaped sprinkles if desired.
4. Let the frosting set before serving.
