A convenience store owner, who sold alcohol to Alex Murdaugh’s underage son, who subsequently crashed a boat owned by the family killing a member overboard, has paid a $15 million settlement to the victim’s family. The family of 19-year Mallory Beach had sued the store in a wrongful death lawsuit. The family had also sued the Murdaugh family and won a settlement with them.
Attorney Mark Tinsley, who represented the Beach family, said that the lawsuit hadn’t been about the money but “that’s a number that represents a level of accountability” and that they hoped that the people who were in the business of selling alcohol would realize that it was a serious responsibility and would keep alcohol “out of the hands of minors.”
Tinsley also said that the amount of the settlement ($15 million) was not confidential as they wanted “other Greg Parker’s to know, that if you sell alcohol illegally, you will be held accountable.”
On February 23, 2019, Paul Murdaugh used his brother Buster Murdaugh’s ID to buy alcohol from a Greg Parker’s convenience store. The 19-year-old minor son of South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh then reportedly took a vessel belonging to the family to the water.
Paul Murdaugh sailed the boat when he was under the influence of alcohol. He crashed the boat into a bridge, near Archer’s Creek. During the crash, 19-year-old Mallory Beach fell into the cold water. Her body was found after eight days.
In June 2021, Alex Murdaugh shot and killed his wife Maggie Murdaugh and son Paul Murgaugh. The shooting took place at Moselle hunting lodge, a property that was owned by the one-time illustrious South Carolina family of attorneys.
In March 2023, lawyer Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to two life terms for shooting his 52-year-old wife and 22-year-old son. Paul Murdaugh was facing three felony counts including boating under the influence, and for causing severe bodily injury and death, when he was shot by his father. He had pled not guilty, and the charges were dismissed, a few months after his death.
