Consumer Report Study Finds Unpredictable Mercury Spikes in Canned Tuna, ‘Too Risky’ for Pregnant Women

Pregnant women should avoid consuming canned tuna because the levels of mercury found in them are “unpredictable,” a report says. In recent tests conducted by nonprofit member organization Consumer Reports (CR) on canned tuna from well-known brands revealed variable concentrations of mercury from can to can. Some tuna cans, in the opinion of CR’s food safety experts, contain levels of mercury that, if consumed by a pregnant woman, could be harmful to the unborn child’s health.

Mercury is a neurotoxin that is particularly harmful to young children, although it can also be harmful to adults when consumed in high doses. It is especially harmful to developing fetuses because it can interfere with their developing bodies and brains, putting them at risk for learning difficulties as well as hearing and vision loss. Adults are also at risk because it can harm their nervous systems, intestines, and kidneys, which can cause tremors, memory loss, insomnia, and other symptoms like muscle weakness.

Cans of skipjack and albacore tuna from five well-known brands were examined by Consumer Reports. According to the findings, albacore contained three times as much mercury as skipjack or light tuna. The albacore tuna from Chicken of the Sea contained ten times more mercury than the lighter tuna alternatives.

On the other hand, there was not much of a difference between the mercury levels in the albacore and skipjack cans from Wild Planet. Even among cans of the same brand, there were significant variations in the levels of mercury present in each one. However, CR also discovered that canned tuna, particularly the light varieties, has quite low average mercury levels.

Since mercury naturally occurs in the oceans, it will always be present in seafood like tuna. However, since the Industrial Revolution, levels have tripled in some oceanic regions. According to experts, precipitation transports mercury from the atmosphere to the ocean, where it is ingested by living things.

CR discovered that the mercury levels were within FDA guidelines, which state that pregnant women can consume canned tuna in light moderation. However, the findings suggested that the mercury levels in the five brands tested were not sufficiently low to permit three servings per week. The watchdog had earlier reported that every bar they tested, produced by well-known companies like Hershey’s, Lindt, and Tony’s Chocolatey, had tested positive for lead and cadmium.
