On October 25, 2023, Congressman Mike Johnson (LA-04) was elected as the Speaker of the House. As a Congressman, Speaker Johnson represents the northwest and western regions of Louisiana. Prior to his election to Congress in 2016, Speaker Johnson was an attorney and served in the Louisiana State Legislature from 2015 to 2017.
Despite becoming the GOP conference’s fourth nominee in two weeks, Johnson was chosen unanimously by the 220 Republicans who cast ballots, as the sharply divided party kept failing to field a candidate with sufficient support.
Following his election, Johnson told Congress that a resolution endorsing Israel’s fight against Hamas would be the first legislation he brought to the House floor.
Johnson declared, “We are going to show not only Israel but the entire world that the barbarism of Hamas that we have seen play out on our television screens is wretched and wrong.”
Johnson will assume the role as Speaker of the House as he faces ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, and Ukraine’s efforts to repel Russia’s invasion. He is a staunch social conservative who supported attempts to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
With two decades of previous experience in Constitutional law, Mike serves on the House Judiciary Committee, and is the chairman of its Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government. He also serves on the Select Committee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government and on the House Armed Services Committee.
His district includes important military installations, including Barksdale Air Force Base, headquarters of the Air Force Global Strike Command, Fort Johnson (formerly Fort Polk) and the Army’s Joint Readiness Training Center, as well as the Louisiana National Guard’s Camp Minden Training Site and other assets.
