CONCACAF News: U.S. falls to Uruguay, eliminated from Copa America

The United States crashed out of the Copa America on Monday, losing 1-0 to Group C winner Uruguay in Kansas City, Mo.

Panama claimed the group’s second qualifying spot to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over Bolivia on Monday in Orlando.

“We know that we’re capable of more and this time we didn’t show it,” U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter said. “It’s really as simple as that. I think that you look at the stage that was set with the fans in this tournament, with a high level of competition in this tournament, and we should have done better.

“We’ll do a review and figure out what went wrong, why it went wrong. But I think it’s an empty feeling right now for sure.”

Uruguay (3-0-0, 9 points) will play the Group D runner-up, either Colombia, Brazil or Costa Rica, in Las Vegas on Saturday. Panama (2-1-0, 6 points) will face the Group D winner in Glendale, Ariz., on Saturday.

With the Panama result, the U.S. (1-2-0, 3 points) needed to win at least 2-1 to advance.

“We had a good start and brought a lot of energy, but at the end of the day, there’s just not enough quality,” U.S. forward Christian Pulisic said. “I felt like we gave it everything, but we just couldn’t find the solution.”

Mathias Olivera scored a controversial goal in the 66th minute, moments after the crowd was buzzing with the news that Bolivia had tied Panama 1-1 to put the U.S. in the advancing spot.

“We faced an opponent that was in need,” Uruguay assistant coach Pablo Quiroga said. “They went for the win since the first moment, it was hard for us, since the onset of the game, to be balanced, but I feel that we adjusted.”

Olivera put in a rebound of a Ronald Araujo header from a set piece. Even though replays appeared to show the play was offside, the goal was not overturned.

“It’s pretty crazy, really,” Berhalter said. “I just don’t understand it. I feel like I know the rules pretty well. I feel like we had the pictures that are showing how the rule could be interpreted in itself, and it’s an offside call.”

The United States entered the match tied with Panama at three points, but the Americans had the goal-differential tiebreaker. The U.S. was put in this predicament because of its stunning 2-1 loss to Panama in the second group match after opening Copa with a 2-0 win against Bolivia.

This was the first time ever that the U.S. failed to advance from the group stage of a tournament after winning the first match. The team had moved on the previous 23 times.

“It’s obvious that the Panama game hurt us, put us behind the eight ball,” Berhalter said. “It’s not the aspirations that we have as a group. We know it’s a talented, talented team with big potential, and we didn’t show it in this tournament.”

The best U.S. chance on Monday came in the 75th minute when Manuel Ugarte cleared a Pulisic shot with the goalkeeper out of position.

U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner started despite having been replaced at halftime of the Panama match following a collision that produced a left leg contusion.

Uruguay had five shots on goal to the United States’ three.

“You can’t be upset with the fight, and I think it goes to show the unity that we have on this team,” Turner said. “No matter what hand is dealt, we stick together and we keep grinding and we keep pushing, but at the end of the day, we didn’t really threaten them enough.”

There was one change for the U.S., necessitated by the 18th-minute red card to Tim Weah vs. Panama. Yunus Musah replaced him.

The first half was a physical mess, with inexperienced referee Kevin Paolo Ortega having trouble maintaining control.

Uruguayan forward Maximiliano Araujo was stretchered off in the 27th minute after he went headfirst into the ground after he was bumped following a collision with U.S. defender Tim Ream.

Quiroga said Maximiliano Araujo lost consciousness on the field but was feeling better and will be evaluated.

U.S. forward Folarin Balogun left in the 41st minute due to an injury after a mashup with Ronald Araujo.

“You can’t really blame the ref on the result, but he definitely inhibited the flow of our game at times,” American defender Antonee Robinson said.

Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa served a suspension issued by the South American soccer federation after his players returned from their locker room late for the start of the second half in the previous match.
