Colorado uses late surge to top Arizona State

Tristan da Silva scored 23 points and KJ Simpson added 12 as visiting Colorado rallied for a 67-59 victory against Arizona State on Thursday in Tempe, Ariz.

Javon Ruffin added 10 points and Luke O’Brien had 10 rebounds and nine points as the Buffaloes (15-12, 7-9 Pac-12) closed the game on a 17-3 run to win for the third time in their past four games.

DJ Horne scored 15 points and Desmond Cambridge Jr. added 12 for the Sun Devils (18-9, 9-7), who saw a two-game winning streak come to an end. Arizona State lost for the fourth time in their last five home games.

Warren Washington had six points and five rebounds for the Sun Devils after missing the past two games because of COVID-19 concerns.

Colorado’s first lead since the opening minute came at 42-40 with 14:46 remaining after a 3-pointer from Julian Hammond III.

Arizona State pushed ahead 56-50 on a 3-pointer by Horne with 5:56 remaining before Colorado went on an 8-0 run to take a 58-56 lead with 4:01 left.

After Colorado led 61-59 with 3:23 remaining, neither team scored for more than two minutes when da Silva hit a 3-pointer with 1:11 remaining for a 64-59 lead. He then added a free throw with 48 seconds left to make it a six-point edge.

The Sun Devils trailed for just 20 seconds in the first half and led by as many as eight points in the opening 20 minutes, including 32-24 with 1:45 remaining before halftime. The Buffaloes closed the half on an 8-0 run to tie the game 32-all, with Simpson scoring the final six points.

Desmond and Devan Cambridge combined for 15 points in the first half for Arizona State, while da Silva had 11 for Colorado and Simpson added 10.

Colorado has three more home games remaining after a visit to Arizona on Saturday, while Arizona State will close out its home schedule on Saturday against Utah. Both teams have No. 4 UCLA and No. 8 Arizona remaining on their schedule.
