Unknown suspects stole almost all the newspapers from racks in a small town in Colorado. The newspaper that is popular for local news featured a story about an alleged rape incident in the police chief’s house, when he was asleep. There was an alleged underage drinking party, and rape allegedly occurred. Criminal charges were filed against suspects, and the paper reported these charges.
The Ouray County Plaindealer is delivered to racks late Wednesday and is available in frames for a dollar. Subscribers receive their copy in the mail, and an e-paper is available. On Wednesday, a suspect or several suspects spent a few dollars to open racks and remove the newspapers. They missed a stand in the coffee shop, so it has been estimated that they stole about 200 newspapers. They returned the papers in a garbage bag late Thursday.

Mike Wiggins and his wife, Erin McIntyre, have been the owners and publishers of the local paper for five years. Wiggins said he believed the person who returned the newspapers had stolen them earlier. He also said that he suspected only one person had stolen it and reported the person’s name to the police. He also said officers had surveillance videos of a few thefts.
Wiggins reprinted the paper and also received support from the community and beyond. He said that he was grateful for their support. On Friday morning, about 250 newspapers filled the empty racks in Ouray County, Colorado.
The newspaper also removed its website paywall so people could read about the felony sexual assault charges that have been filed against three men, one of whom is a relative of the police chief.
Associated Press reported that police chief Jeff Wood did not return a phone message that the outlet had made asking for comment.
Wiggins said the paper would report on the theft in its next issue.
Mike Wiggins posted on social media, “If you hoped to silence or intimidate us, you failed miserably. We’ll find out who did this. And another press run is imminent.”
