CNN President Chris Licht, who has been the head honcho from six months or so, fired another memo to CNN staff telling them that he was accelerating the layoff plan and many more jobs would be cut by the end of the year. He told them to prepare themselves for “unsettling” changes. Months earlier, he had axed the streaming service of the network called CNN+ and also removed legendary correspondents such as Brian Stelter and John Harwood and shifted Don Lemon to the morning slot.
The Wednesday memo, sent to staff mentions “widespread concern over the global economic outlook.” It said that the risk would have to be factored into the network’s long term planning. He added that the process would be “unsettling” as the changes that would be made would not be easy as they would “affect people, budgets and projects.”
The memo also mentioned that the network’s aim to make most of its decisions by the end of the year, in order to “start 2023 feeling settled and prepared for the future.”
Licht also said that he would update the staff as soon as he could. He indicated that there would be town halls in the last two months of the year with CNN staff. He didn’t mention the number of layoffs but said that the network be a “stronger and more nimble organization” that would face the global economic challenges as well as “grow into the future.”
