On Wednesday, CNN announced that former director general of the BBC and ex-president and CEO of the New York Times, Mark Thompson is the next chief executive of the network. Sir Mark Thompson has been credited with transforming both these leading media companies and is expected to lead CNN through turbulent times after CEO Jeff Zucker was forced to step down in February 2022 and Chris Licht left the network a few months ago.
CNN was functioning with the help of a team of four senior executives—Amy Entelis, Virginia Moseley, Eric Sherling, and David C. Leavy till the appointment of a new leader. They are expected to continue in their roles and will now report to Mark Thompson.
In a memo to CNN staff, David Zaslav, who is the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery said that Mark Thompson would join the network on October 9. He described Thompson as the exact leader needed by the media company “to take the helm at this pivotal time. He also said that the real strength of CNN was “its people” and that they continued to “set the highest standard” in all that they did.
Mark Thompson also wrote to CNN staff and mentioned the pressures faced by TV journalism. He noted that he had “no magic wand” to dispel disruption but he saw “opportunity” where others saw “threat” and commended CNN as a “great brand” and more.
CNN has been facing tough times with resignations, firings and more. It has also faced political scandals and a new merger. The network has also lost hundreds of thousands of viewers according to several reports.
Last week, CNN announced that it will be launching CNN Max. This will be a dedicated new hub throughout the day and night on the Max streaming service. Max streams content from the portfolios of companies belonging to Warner Bros. Discovery networks.
