Chucky Hepburn scored 29 points for No. 25 Louisville, which jumped to an early lead and held on for an 89-81 win over visiting Florida State on Saturday.

The senior guard, who also made five steals, did most of his damage at the free throw line, setting a school record by making 17-of-19 from the stripe. He went just 2-for-8 from the 3-point line, but that included one as the shot clock expired to give the Cardinals (21-6, 14-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) a 79-64 lead with 4:17 remaining.

J’Vonne Hadley posted his seventh double-double of the season, adding 18 points and 11 rebounds as Louisville won its fifth straight and 15th out of their last 16.

Louisville had two 8-0 runs and a 7-0 run to build a 39-19 lead with five minutes left in the first half. The Seminoles (16-11, 7-9 ACC) shot just 36.8 percent (7 of 19) and committed 10 turnovers in the first 15 minutes, while the Cardinals shot 60 percent (12-for-20). Florida State would make four of its last five shots in the first half but could only narrow the Cardinals’ lead to 45-31 at halftime.

Florida State carried that hot hand into the second half, hitting 10 of its first 16. That allowed the Seminoles to whittle away the Louisville lead to 64-58 after a Jerry Deng layup with 10:22 remaining.

The Seminoles shot 54.4 percent (32-for-59) and got Hepburn and Terrence Edwards Jr. in foul trouble, as both earned four fouls. However, they could not overcome the Cardinals’ 30-for-34 shooting from the line.

Hepburn, who tied the school record with 16 made free throws on Jan. 1 against North Carolina, went 5-for-6 in the final 1:02 as the Louisville lead never fell below six points in the second half.

Jamir Watkins led Florida State with 23 points, and Malique Ewin went 9-for-10 from the field to finish with 19 points and nine rebounds. Daquan Davis added 10 points.

Edwards added 16 points for Louisville, which also got 11 from Reyne Smith.
