In a seemingly bizarre move, China’s civil aviation body has suggested that flight attendants could wear disposable diapers to stay COVID free in flights.“It is recommended that the cabin crew wear disposable diapers and avoid using the toilet barring special circumstances, to avoid infection risk,”
This was mentioned in the document titled “Technical Guidelines for Epidemic Prevention and Control for Airlines,” – Sixth Edition. Although it was published towards the end of last month, it escaped the attention of the English-language media for quite a while. This document came to their attention on Thursday.
This peculiar suggestion is sandwiched between more prosaic and practical suggestions related to controlling the spread of the virus in the pandemic. It has recommendations that are adopted by airlines and crew all over the world such as the provision of medical grade face masks and disposable rubber gloves for cabin crew. It also speaks of protective clothing as well as shoe covers – all of which are not just recommended but are essential for overall safety.
However, the mention of disposable diapers has struck a chord among many, who wonder how and why such a recommendation or suggestion was made?
