The 39-year-old unleashed a fierce barrage of gunfire upon the officers, resulting in a fatal exchange that claimed the lives of four officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. Despite the swift response by law enforcement, Hughes was fatally shot during the confrontation.
