CFL News: Playoff berth in reach for Stampeders vs. eliminated Argonauts

The Calgary Stampeders can clinch a playoff berth with a win at home Saturday night against Toronto in the season finale for the Argonauts.

The Stampeders (9-7) are at home for the first time in a month after playing three straight road games. They halted a four-game losing streak with a 37-20 win at Hamilton last week.

The Argonauts (5-12) have lost four in a row and have a bye next week, making this their last game as reigning Grey Cup champions.

Calgary’s Dedrick Mills is closing in on the CFL rushing title with a league-leading 1,225 rushing yards and Vernon Adams needs 251 passing yards to reach 4,000 for the second time.

“It means a lot,” Mills told the Calgary Herald. “I’ve been hunting this rushing title for four years since I’ve been here. It just feels amazing to keep coming out here and just blessing my teammates and blessing the field with the greatness of all the work we put in the offseason.”

Toronto’s Dejon Brissett is also chasing a milestone, needing 113 receiving yards on Saturday to reach 1,000 for the first time in his fifth season with the Argonauts.

“It would be a first,” Brissett told the team website this week. “I haven’t had 1,000, not even in high school, not in college, definitely not in the pros, so that would be amazing.”

Brissett will have an opportunity against a Calgary defense that ranks eighth against the pass, allowing 274.2 yards per game.

It’s not clear who will be throwing Brissett the ball, however. Nick Arbuckle (shoulder) was shut down earlier this month. Jarret Doege started last week’s 27-19 loss at Saskatchewan but was banged up, hitting the back of his head on the turf at one point. Reserves Tucker Horn (4 for 5 for 35 yards) and Max Duggan (0 for 1) both took snaps.

Calgary won the first meeting back in Week 2 at Toronto, 29-19. Adams and Mills both rushed for touchdowns and Adrian Greene returned a 40-yard interception for a TD for the Stampeders.

Calgary finishes the regular season next Friday at Edmonton.
