CFL News: Elks president/CEO Victor Cui out amid historic streak

The Edmonton Elks and team president and CEO Victor Cui parted ways Tuesday, with the team in the midst of a record losing streak.

The Elks have lost 22 consecutive home games, the longest such streak in North American professional sports history. Last month, the Elks set the record of 21 consecutive home defeats, breaking the St. Louis Browns’ mark of 20, which was set in 1953.

The Elks have not won at home since Oct. 12, 2019.

“We thank Victor for his work during his time with the Club. This was a difficult decision for everyone involved, but as a Board we believe it’s in the best interests of all parties to move in a new direction,” said Tom Richards, chair of the EE Football Club board of directors, in a team news release.

Edmonton (0-9) has lost 13 consecutive games overall, tying a 60-year-old franchise record. The Elks would set the mark with another loss on Thursday at Hamilton.

The Elks hired Cui, an Edmonton native, in January 2022. He has extensive experience in sports operations, including with One Championship, a combat sports organization he launched in 2010 that went on to become the largest sports media property in Asia.

“I have made the difficult decision to step back from the Club and focus on my family,” Cui said in a team news release. “Despite the team’s current record, I have full confidence that the positives we are starting to see on the field will lead to success moving forward. I want to thank the Board for this incredible opportunity and look forward to my role as a lifelong fan.”
