CFL News: Division lead up for grabs as Bombers visit Roughriders

The visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers will look to move into first place in the West Division on Sunday when they open a home-and-home series against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina.

The Blue Bombers (5-6) have won three in a row and look to avenge a 19-9 setback at Saskatchewan on July 19. The Roughriders (5-5-1) are 0-4-1 since that victory over Winnipeg.

“It’s interesting how the story gets written every year,” Blue Bombers linebacker Adam Bighill said Thursday, per the Winnipeg Sun. “And where things fall as you get toward the back third of the season.”

The West Division rivals will finish their season series in the Banjo Bowl in Manitoba on Sept. 7.

Zach Collaros connected with Kenny Lawler on a 10-yard touchdown pass in the waning moments of the Blue Bombers’ 26-23 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Aug. 23. CFL rushing leader Brady Olivera ran for 120 yards in the win and was named the top running back on the CFL’s Honor Roll for the month of August.

Saskatchewan was left to pick up the pieces after squandering a late lead in a 20-19 loss to the Toronto Argonauts on Aug. 22.

“We got to be better, but, as the football gods continue to do, they leave us with the keys in our hands to really drive this thing,” Roughriders coach Corey Mace said. “So learn, push forward. It’s Labor Day, so everybody’s gassed up. If it comes down to the wire, we gotta be on it, because (the Bombers) are ready to go.”

Saskatchewan’s Trevor Harris completed 18 of 29 passes for 190 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions versus Toronto. He was named the top offensive player in the CFL’s monthly honor roll, while Winnipeg cornerback Tyrell Ford earned the defensive distinction.

The Roughriders are 3-2 at home this season, while the Blue Bombers are 1-4 on the road.
