CFL News: Argos hope to avenge early season loss to rival Alouettes

Davis Alexander is expected to return under center on Thursday when the Montreal Alouettes host the Toronto Argonauts.

The Alouettes (3-2) began the season with such promise, winning three games in a row before Alexander sat out the next two — and the team’s bye last week — with a hamstring injury.

“The hamstring is feeling good. I’ll be ready to go on Thursday. I can’t wait to get back to it. I’m as close to 100 percent (healthy) as I can get without actually testing it in a real-life situation,” Alexander said. “I’ll be able to run and do what I want to do, but I’ll probably know a little bit more on Thursday.”

Alexander had completed 62-of-82 passes for 803 yards and five touchdowns before sustaining his injury against the Edmonton Elks on June 19. He will take over the helm from McLeod Bethel-Thompson, who tossed two interceptions in a loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on June 27 and threw for just 192 yards in a setback to the B.C. Lions.

While Montreal appears poised to make a quarterback change, Toronto will be unable to do so.

The Argonauts once again will turn to 2024 Grey Cup MVP Nick Arbuckle, with fellow quarterback Chad Kelly ruled out while he continues to recover from a serious leg injury. Kelly, the CFL’s 2023 outstanding player, sustained the injury in the 2024 East Division final versus the Alouettes.

Toronto also received tough news during its bye week as offensive lineman Ryan Hunter will be out six-to-eight weeks after he was hit by a car, TSN reported.

Named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman last season, Hunter has appeared in all five games for the Argonauts (1-4) in 2025.

Despite the team’s struggles on and off the field, Argonauts head coach Ryan Dinwiddie refused to let the negativity get the better of him.

“I took two days off just to reset my battery,” Dinwiddie told the team’s website. “I went to a Blue Jays game with my kids, then really dove in and self-scouted what we’re doing; what we’ve had success at and what we’re really struggling at, just narrowing down what we can fix.”
