Celebrity WNBA star Brittney Griner reached U.S. soil earlier in December. On Friday, she posted a message of gratitude and more on social media for the first time, after her release from a Russian prison. She was part of a prison swap between the Biden Administration and Moscow. Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer reached Moscow, after the swap. The two prisoners: Griner and Bout were exchanged; reportedly in an airport in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.
Brittney Griner posted two photos and a lengthy post on Instagram. The first photo showed her stepping off a plane and in the second photo she is seen hugging her wife Cherelle Griner.
Griner wrote that it felt “so good to be home.” She thanked everybody who helped her and said that “her faith” and the love of so many people had kept her going and she thanked them from the bottom of her heart.
She posted a long list of names of the people who helped bring her home including her wife, her family members, her team mates, her legal teams, a governor, activists, leaders, grassroots organizations and more.
She reserved a special thank you for
President Biden
Vice President Harris
Secretary Blinken and
the entire Biden-Harris administration.
Griner said that she would use her platform to help President Biden bring home Paul Whelan. She also asked everyone to help “bring all Americans home” as every family deserved “to be whole.” She also thanked the PISA and medical team in Texas who helped her after she reached America.
Brittney Griner said that she wanted to clarify that she would play basketball for the Phoenix Mercury team this season. This will be her 10th professional season and by doing so she would express her gratitude to all those who worked for her release.
The two time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA star was imprisoned in Russia after her baggage which contained vials of cannabis oil, was seized in Moscow, Russia. Although she said that she had the oil for medical use , it is illegal in Russia. She was convicted on drug charges and imprisoned in Russia, till the Biden-Harris administration negotiated for her release.
