Celebrity Show The Idol, one of the most eagerly anticipated TV series of the year by web fans, is almost here. A collaboration between The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) and the creators of Euphoria (Sam Levinson), The Idol is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May before airing on HBO.

The show that has sparked controversy revolves around Jocelyn (played by Lily-Rose Depp), a pop star who, after a nervous breakdown, is determined to make a triumphant comeback as the “greatest touring act ever.” To achieve her goal, she teams up with a sleazy producer played by Tesfaye, who manipulates her as they both delve into a world of sex, drugs, and pop music.

The series aims to explore the highs and lows of becoming a successful pop star.

However, the production of The Idol has faced its share of challenges. A Rolling Stone magazine article in March detailed the difficulties behind the scenes. The article initially referred to the series as “torture porn” and highlighted delays caused by scheduling and budget issues, as well as last-minute changes to remove explicit scenes of violence and sex.

In response, Tesfaye shared a clip from the series on social media in which his character dismisses the magazine as “irrelevant.” In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, The Weeknd expressed his dissatisfaction with Rolling Stone’s article, stating that he interpreted the subtext in a negative light. While he disagreed with the notion that the show depicted a “rape fantasy,” he refused to apologize for the show’s source material, acknowledging that Hollywood can be a dark place that inspires great art.

Furthermore, the celebrity rapper The Weeknd addressed the issues regarding reshoots and scheduling conflicts. Following Rolling Stone’s criticism, Deadline reported that he believed the show had too much of a “female perspective” under the original director, Amy Seimetz. As a result, the series was revamped with co-creator Sam Levinson taking over. The Weeknd, however, considered this a normal part of the business, emphasizing that shows are often reshot and expressing his positive experience working with Amy.

With the premiere of the celebrity show approaching, audiences will have the opportunity to form their own opinions. The show is set to debut on Sunday, June 4th, on HBO and Max.
