German celebrity tennis player Boris Becker has been released from a prison in the United Kingdom. The tennis ace faced a prison term under the Insolvency Act, in the nation and was sentenced to a 2 and a half year term. However, he was released in eight months and has been deported to his home country–Germany. He reportedly left in a private plane, sponsored by a GermanTV station which is expected to be the first to interview him, after he reaches home.
The 55-year old German, who was living in the U.K., since 2012 was found guilty, with four charges under the Insolvency Act. He left for Germany on Thursday as he qualified for automatic deportation as he is not a British citizen.
He was initially held at the Wandsworth Prison that is located in south-west London. He was later moved to Huntercombe Prison, in Oxfordshire this May, according to reports.
In June 2017, Boris Becker declared bankruptcy, over an unpaid loan, on his Spanish estate, in the island of Mallorca.
Early in 2022, he faced trial for accusations that he hid assets that were worth millions of pounds as he did not want to pay his debts; about 2.5 million pounds, according to reports. He was found guilty of four charges that were related to his bankruptcy. However, he was acquitted of 20 other charges.
In April, Judge Deborah Taylor at Southwark Crown Court sentenced him to a jail term of 2 and a half years but he got an early release in eight months, on Thursday. The judge said that Becker had played the system “with bad faith.”
