Meta Platforms launched its new app Threads through its popular social media platform Instagram and millions of users have joined the app that is touted to be a rival to Twitter. The social media platform Twitter was bought by Tesla CEO Elon Musk for $44 billion late last year. Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that thirty million users signed up for the new service called Threads on the first day of its launch.
Mark Zuckerberg described Threads as a “friendly” rival to Twitter. However, CEO of Twitter Linda Yaccarino posted on the social media platform that it could be “imitated” but it could not be duplicated.
Although Oscar Wilde said, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness,” imitation can prove to be more successful and costly than duplication as experts say that Threads could pull away users who are unhappy with the recent changes that have been implemented on Twitter.
Social media companies need traffic to get a larger slice of the advertisement pie as well as appeal to general audiences rather than cliques as seen on Twitter. Many advertisers have left Twitter due to several reasons. There has also been a perception that the social media platform caters to certain ideologies.

The paid subscription of the blue bird does not seem to have flown as high as its masters expected it to. After verification became a paid subscription, some celebrity stars and influencers left the platform, while others left as the checks and balances fell short, when compared with the earlier avatar of Twitter.
Recently, Twitter also started limiting the number of posts that could be read and this did not go down well with its users.
On the other hand, Threads that linked through Instagram, a social media app already has billions of web fans following celebrity stars and other groups. It has the ability to grow exponentially.
Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg was asked if Threads would be “bigger than Twitter.” He replied, “It’ll take some time, but I think there should be a public conversations app with 1 billion+ people on it.”
Zuckerberg added that Twitter had the opportunity to make Twitter such an app but didn’t do so and hopefully they (Instagram’s parent Meta) would do it.
