Celebrity actress Amber Heard has settled her defamation case against her ex-husband, celebrity actor Johnny Depp, putting an end to one of Hollywood’s most publicized court cases. After the long case, Heard has come to an agreement where she will pay $1 million to Depp. The long-running legal battle was set to continue in an appeals court, but Depp’s lawyers said Heard agreed to pay $1 million to end it.
The actress announced on Monday that she will not pursue her appeal in the defamation case involving her ex-husband, posting on Instagram that she had decided to settle the dispute following a trial defeat earlier this year.
In June, a seven-person jury in Virginia determined that Heard had defamed Depp when she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse” in a 2018 op-ed in The Washington Post. The jury awarded Depp more than $10 million in damages, but it also determined that Depp defamed Heard through a comment made by his lawyer, awarding Heard $2 million in damages.
In their statement, Depp’s lawyers countered any possible perception that the former couple’s agreement was a victory for Heard, and wrote that the $1 million payment “reinforces Heard’s acknowledgment of the conclusion of the legal system’s rigorous pursuit for justice.” Depp’s lawyers stated that the actor had plans to donate the money to charity.
For weeks, the live-streamed trial became an internet preoccupation. There was much vitriol targeting Heard, whose claims of sexual assault and domestic violence became the subject of memes and mockery. Heard stated in her post that the online abuse played a role in her decision to withdraw her appeal.
Amber also mentions how she has lost faith in the American legal system after being found liable for defaming Johnny, whereas in the UK… the verdict was in her favor. She claims to have expended nearly all of her resources in fighting this thing here, and she appears to have concluded that it was a losing battle. Fans are excited for more news to come.
In the post, the celebrity actress stated that the terms of the agreement did not limit what she could say about the case. Depp has repeatedly denied abusing Heard, and he has portrayed her as the aggressor in the relationship all through the trial.
