Celebrity Serena Williams was honored on Saturday for her contributions to the world of sports and community service. The retired women’s tennis megastar Williams won the Jackie Robinson Sports Prize at the 2023 National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Awards. The award was given by actress Kerry Washington in recognition of her outstanding athletic accomplishments and services to the global Black community.
Serena revolutionized women’s tennis with her authoritative style of play and won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, more than any other player had won in the open era.

Serena was chosen for the award by the NAACP in recognition of her accomplishments in tennis, business, charity, and fashion. The Pasadena Civic Auditorium erupted in raucous applause as the 41-year-old entered the stage wearing a velvet gown to receive her award.
In her speech, she thanked the NAACP, an institution that continues to accelerate change in areas such as healthcare, sports, the economy, education, and much more. She also thanked the Image Awards and the Hollywood Bureau for honoring her with the Jackie Robinson Award. The businesswoman discussed the concerted efforts made by the Black-focused group to elevate Black athletes as change-makers.

Derrick Johnson, the president and chief executive officer of the NAACP, spoke about honoring the well-known player before the event.
The celebrity athlete is the epitome of Black success, according to Johnson. She has raised the standard for athletes everywhere, whether it be with her record-breaking victories on the tennis court, her business savvy, or her charitable endeavors. He said they were happy to present the Jackie Robinson Sports Medal this year to her as a mark of honor.
In 1995, Serena turned official and started playing tennis. She was immediately recognized as a rising talent. Serena demonstrated her abilities on the court by winning her first Grand Slam in doubles in 1999. A Grand Slam in tennis occurs when a player captures all four major championships in the same calendar year. This encompasses the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, the French Open, and the Australian Open.
