The news that actor Johnny Depp will be a part of Rihanna’s upcoming Savage X Fenty fashion show has sparked fury online and calls for the singer’s lingerie line to be boycotted.
In the midst of his public court spat with his ex-wife Amber Heard, the 59-year-old actor said he was backlisted by Hollywood. He has already shot his cameo in the runway spectacular, which will premiere on Amazon’s Prime Video next week. Although Depp is not mentioned in promotional materials or the show’s trailer, CNN has directly confirmed that Johnny will be there. Requests for comment about the choice to cast Depp were not immediately answered by representatives for Rihanna or Amazon.
In advance of the debut of her virtual Savage X Fenty lingerie runway show, Rihanna is getting flak for the involvement of Johnny Depp.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Depp will make history as the first man to appear in a “spotlight moment” in the fourth episode of the show, which will air on Amazon Prime on November 9.
Depp’s appearance in the programm comes after their heated defamation trial in which a jury found that Heard had defamed Depp in a Washington Post op-ed in which she described herself as a public figure symbolizing domestic abuse, but made no specific mention of Depp (in 2016, Heard filed for divorce from Depp and filed a restraining order, alleging that he was physically abusive towards her). The Depp v. Heard trial’s media coverage and online discussion generated wider discussions on abuse, survivors, and power.
When it was revealed that Depp had been hired in the show, there was an immediate outcry online; as users voiced their displeasure, “Savage X Fenty” and Depp’s name started trending on Twitter. One user remarked that Rihanna was crazy for letting Johnny Depp into her show. Prior to the trial, no one was talking about this man. He is only important because of his history of beating women. Adding Depp to the event, according to another tweet, the show did little other than add “shock value.”
People expressed their displeasure on Twitter over Depp’s presence as a model in the event given the past abuse allegations made against him.
They also cited Rihanna’s personal history of domestic abuse.
People expressed their displeasure with the choice to cast Depp online using the hashtags #AbuserxFenty and #DitchDepp, and they made calls to boycott the company.
Unhinged right-wing sexist fanatics have hailed Johnny Depp as a hero, and now he’s been invited to appear in the @SavageXFenty show.
Drew Dixon commented that he never imagined such a strong woman would give in to the #MeToo backlash.
