Celebrity rapper Fetty Wap, who gained fame with his popular song “Trap Queen,” which romanticized a relationship intertwined with the drug trade, has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for trafficking narcotics across the United States.

The 31-year-old Willie Junior Maxwell II had been kept in custody since his bail was revoked in August. Subsequently, he pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.

Between June 2019 and June 2020, Maxwell, along with his co-defendants, was reportedly involved in the possession and distribution of over 220 pounds of heroin, fentanyl, and crack cocaine. According to prosecutors, they obtained the drugs from the West Coast and transported them to Suffolk County, New York, either by mail or through drivers using hidden compartments. These were subsequently given to dealers, who ultimately sold them in Long Island and New Jersey.

On the day of his sentencing, Fetty Wap appeared before Judge Joanna Seybert at the federal court in Central Islip, N.Y. The sentence handed down was one year longer than the minimum. During the proceedings, Maxwell’s lawyer, Elizabeth Macedonio, argued that her client had been supporting numerous relatives and children and needed money to sustain them once the live entertainment industry was impacted by the pandemic. She also highlighted the challenges he had faced before his music career, including bullying and drug addiction due to his glaucoma. Maxwell personally expressed regret to the families and neighborhoods impacted by drug usage.

Prosecutors sought a longer prison term, asserting that Fetty Wap had used his fame to glamorize the drug trade, earning millions from his music following the success of “Trap Queen” in 2015. They pointed out the use of children in the song’s music video and highlighted the extensive media attention the case had received.

Since his arrest, Fetty Wap has been held in protective custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn due to concerns about his fame making him a target. Even while the case was pending, he released a slow R&B song titled “Sweet Yamz,” which prosecutors claimed was coded language for drugs.

In addition to being charged with cocaine trafficking, celebrity Fetty Wap has also been arrested in Las Vegas in 2019 for reportedly attacking three hotel casino staff members.
