Legendary actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 63, were discovered deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, residence on Tuesday under mysterious circumstances. The couple was found in separate rooms of their home, with one of their three dogs also deceased. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of death but emphasized no immediate signs of foul play. A search warrant was later issued to further investigate the scene.
The discovery was made by a maintenance worker who arrived for a routine visit and noticed the door ajar. Upon entering, he alerted police after finding Hackman’s body in the mudroom and Arakawa’s in an adjacent bathroom. Near Arakawa, an open prescription bottle and scattered pills were observed, along with a space heater. A German Shepherd was found deceased beside her, while two other dogs on the property were unharmed.
The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office confirmed no evidence of gunshot wounds, physical trauma, or gas leaks, as ruled out by the New Mexico Gas Company. Despite initial findings, the issuance of a search warrant underscores lingering questions surrounding the deaths.
Hackman, a revered figure in Hollywood, enjoyed a prolific career spanning decades, earning two Academy Awards for The French Connection (1971) and Unforgiven (1992). Known for his versatility, he portrayed heroes, villains, and complex characters across genres, receiving five Oscar nominations in total.
The couple met in the mid-1980s in California and later settled in Santa Fe, where they owned a ranch and a secondary property. Hackman is survived by three children from a prior marriage; he and Arakawa had no children together.
