Celebrity NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal recently said that he would like to join Jeff Bezos and buy the Phoenix Suns, which is up for sale. Robert Sarver put his team for sale after it had faced backlash for racial remarks from him as well as for workplace sexual misconduct. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has expressed an interest and Shaquille O’Neal would like to join the billionaire, in purchasing the team. Reports say that there could be other potential buyers including Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle and Laurene Powell Jobs, the wife of late Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple.
According to TMZ Sports, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal was interested in buying the beleaguered Suns team but backed out when he came to know that “Big Man JB” [Jeff Bezos] was interested in buying the team. The Hall of Fame basketball player said that nobody could compete with Bezos and he had “ordered 50 things of Amazon” and that Bezos would soon be collecting the money.
Shaq, as he is often called, said that if Bezos wanted him on board he would “gladly like to talk to him.”
The Big Diesel has been interested in acquiring a team from quite a while. Although he is still a Lakers legend, he has played with other teams. He had said on the Big Podcast that he wanted to buy the Orlando Magic team from the DeVos family, if they wanted to sell it. He was drafted by the team, in 1992. However, there has been no indication of a sale and the team remains with the family.
Shaquille O’Neal has also played for the Suns from 2008 to 2009, before he joined the Cleveland Cavaliers. Will this help the 4x NBA Champion get in the deal with Jeff Bezos remains to be seen.
Tangent: Jeff Bezos is an astute businessman with more billions that he can spend. Getting an enthusiastic NBA legend as a part owner looks like a potential slam dunk for all.
