Celebrity actor Nathan Chasing Horse, who appeared in Dances With Wolves with Kevin Costner, has been detained for allegedly leading a cult that sexually assaulted young indigenous girls. The 1990 Oscar-winning film Smiles a Lot featured Horse as Smiles a Lot, a Sioux tribe member.
According to police records, Las Vegas police detained and searched the home of the actor who is now accused of being a cult leader and of sexually abusing young Indigenous girls for over a 20-year period. Horse was apprehended on Tuesday afternoon close to the house in north Las Vegas that he is alleged to have lived in with his five wives.
Chasing Horse gained a reputation among Native American tribes across the United States and Canada as a so-called medicine man who conducted healing ceremonies and spiritual gatherings. Chasing Horse’s followers thought he could communicate with higher beings and referred to him as “Medicine Man” or “Holy Person” while sexually assaulting young girls on numerous occasions.

His capture is the result of a lengthy investigation that started in October 2022 after police received a tip. Chasing Horse is allegedly the founder of the Circle, the subject of a 50-page search warrant.
In the US, lawmakers and state attorneys general are considering setting up specialized divisions to handle cases involving Indigenous women. In addition to discovering sexual assault allegations against Chasing Horse dating back to the early 2000s, Las Vegas police have also identified at least six alleged victims.

The Sicangu Sioux, one of Lakota nation’s seven tribes, reside in South Dakota’s Rosebud Reservation, where Chasing Horse was born. The warrant alleges that he was expelled from the Fort Peck Reservation in 2015 for human trafficking.
Although the arrest is related to crimes allegedly committed in Clark County, Nevada, the warrant also contains information about crimes reported elsewhere: child abuse, and sexual assault on a minor. According to the warrant, some victims were as young as 13 years of age.
Another accusation against the celebrity actor is that he recorded sexual assaults and set up sex with the victims for other men who allegedly paid him.
