Unwittingly igniting a discussion regarding Instagram’s censorship guidelines, Tommy Lee shared a photo of his penis on his account, and it was visible for more than four hours.
Mötley Crüe drummer Lee tweeted a full body photo of himself on Thursday morning in the early hours, and the rock star swiftly gained popularity on social media. While many people reported shock at the image, others were quick to note out that Instagram frequently removes images of female nudity, and many people shared their own experiences with censorship.
“These new Instagram filters are finally gettin wood … I mean GOOD!!!!!!” Tommy Lee wrote -“They finally gave me my own filter!”
Tommy Lee is known for the sex video that was stolen and released in 1995 against the wishes of both he and his ex-wife Pamela Anderson. Sebastian Lee and Lily James portray the scandal in the February premiere of “Pam & Tommy” on Hulu.
Instagram has its policies listed on its website about nudity- “We know that there are times when people might want to share nude images that are artistic or creative in nature, but for a variety of reasons, we don’t allow nudity on Instagram.

This includes photos, videos, and some digitally created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully nude buttocks. It also includes some photos of female nipples, but photos in the context of breastfeeding, birth giving and after-birth moments, health-related situations (for example, post-mastectomy, breast cancer awareness or gender confirmation surgery) or an act of protest are allowed. Nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures is OK too.”
