Celebrity Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence attended the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, not only to promote her film Bread and Roses, which she not only produced, but also to support Afghan women’s experiences under Taliban rule. Jennifer has secretly been involved in producing a documentary about the Taliban, alongside her friend and film producer, celebrity Justine Ciarrocchi, through their production company, Excellent Cadaver, reports say. Filmed discreetly by filmmakers on the ground in Afghanistan, the documentary recently premiered at the festival.
As the world witnessed the fall of Kabul and the Taliban’s resurgence in 2021, Jennifer and Justin pondered how they could contribute to the cause of women’s rights. Following the Taliban’s takeover and the subsequent imposition of strict religious regulations, women and girls were banned from various aspects of public life, including education. In their search for a director, Jennifer and Justin discovered Sahra Mani, known for her 2019 documentary “A Thousand Girls Like Me,” which addressed the quest for justice of a sexually abused woman.
Bread and Roses features footage of women learning in confined spaces, challenging the militia, and capturing their daily lives as they adapt to their new reality in Kabul. The documentary provides an intimate look at the lives of three women after the Taliban’s resurgence. At the special screening during the Cannes Film Festival, Mani expressed that the film carries a message from Afghan women, urging others to be their voice in the face of Taliban dictatorship.

Despite the challenges faced by the camera crews and the subjects of the documentary, Mani emphasized she wanted to shed light on the drastic changes they have experienced, including the mandatory wearing of veils when venturing outside. Mani stressed that the situation depicted in the film reflects the everyday reality of life under a cruel dictatorship that cannot be ignored.
The Hunger Games actor emphasized that she recognized that Afghan women currently lack autonomy within their country and stressed the importance of granting them the opportunity to document their experiences in their own unique way.
Celebrity actress Jennifer Lawrence, whose full name is Jennifer Shrader Lawrence, became more well-known for her portrayal of the mutant Mystique in the films X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix. Although the film has raised awareness about the plight of women in Afghanistan, Lawrence admitted feeling helpless in the face of such a challenging and ongoing crisis.
