Celebrity director David Leland has died. A galaxy of celebrity stars and several web fans have posted tributes to the veteran director. David Hugh Leland, who was 82 years old, has also been a theater, film, and TV writer. Some of the celebrity actors who posted heartfelt tributes to Leland included Pierce Brosnan, Liam Neeson, and Tim Roth. Many web fans also poured in tributes.
The death of the director, who had a five-decade career in the acting and film industry, was announced on Christmas Eve. The announcement was made by Casarotto Ramsay & Associates, who were Leland’s publicists for decades. It also said he was surrounded by his “loving family” when he died in his home.
Celebrity director David Hugh Leland was born on April 20, 1941. He began his career as an actor after training at the Central School of Speech and Drama. He had several stage credits. He later moved to direction at the Crucible Theater.
Celebrity director David Leland is known to have directed and written several blockbuster films. However, he remains best known for writing and directing Wish You Were Here in 1987. The film starred celebrity Emily Lloyd and was his directorial debut. The movie won a BAFTA award for Best Original Screenplay and the FIPRESCI prize at the Cannes Film Festival. He also wrote Personal Services in 1987 which starred celebrity Julie Walters and the film was directed by Terry Jones.
Some of the popular films Leland directed included The Big Man starring celebrity Liam Neeson and Land Girls starring Rachel Weisz. He also directed an episode of HBO’s Band of Brothers that won an Emmy and directed and wrote The Borgias starring celebrity actor Jeremy Irons.
He was friendly with the Beatles and directed a cinematic documentary Concert for George. The 2003 doc starred the remaining Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr and celebrity stars including Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, and others. The documentary won a Grammy award.
David Leland leaves behind their wife Sabrina and their four daughters and one son as well as six grandchildren.
