Celebrity director Baz Luhrmann, who created a huge box office hit with Moulin Rouge, is back with another big movie that was released at Cannes 2022. The biopic of Elvis Presley received rare praise from his former wife Priscilla Presley who described the movie “Elvis” directed by Luhrmann as “outstanding.” Austin Butler played the role of the King of Rock and Roll.
At a press conference for the biopic, Luhrmann said that the review or critique that meant the most to them was from the woman who was married to him. The 59-year old filmmaker said that she (Priscilla Presley) said that if her husband (Elvis) was here today, he would have said, “Hot damn, you are me.” The director was emotional as he said, “It was the best review I’ve ever had.”
Priscilla Presley was married to Elvis Presley between 1967 and 1973. He died in 1977, four years after their divorce, when she was 27. They have a daughter together called Lisa Marie Presley, who is 54.
Luhrmann’s movie shows Elvis’ rise to fame right from his impoverished childhood. It traces the emergence of the King, as he rose to stardom and ends after his death at the age of 42.
The acclaimed celebrity director said that he wanted audiences who didn’t care about Elvis to get a feeling of the circumstances when he first performed. Luhrmann described Elvis as “the original punk rocker.”
Elvis, the movie directed by Baz Luhrmann, was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, Universal Pictures. It received a 12-minute standing ovation at Cannes 2022 surpassing that of celebrity Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick ovation at the Festival du Cannes 2022, though Tom Cruise got a fly by as the French air force honored him by soaring above with jets and painting the sky with colorful trails of red, white and blue smoke.
The biopic Elvis has the following stars in the main roles:
Austin Butler as Elvis Presley
Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom
Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley.
