Celebrity couple Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez announce a $100 million relief for those who have been affected by the wildfires in Maui. Lauren Sanchez, who is the fiancée of billionaire founder of Amazon Jeff Bezos, posted the announcement on social media. Wildfires continued to burn on the island on Friday, the day she posted about the relief fund.
On Thursday, Sanchez posted on Threads that they would be making a donation. On Friday, she posted on both Instagram and Threads that both of them are establishing a $100 million Maui fund. This fund will help “Maui get back on its feet now and over the coming years” and more.
Jeff Bezos owns a mansion near La Perouse Bay on the southern coast of Maui. He bought it for $78 million in 2021. Lauren Sanchez is the vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund that fights climate change.
Celebrity Oprah Winfrey, who also has a home in Maui, donated pillows, blankets, cots, toiletries and other items to shelters she visited in person. She is expected to do more after it becomes clear where both short- and long-term funds will be required.
Other celebrity stars and billionaires who reportedly own homes in Maui or close to it include Jimmy Buffet, Jensen Huang, Steven Tyler, Clint Eastwood, Owen Wilson, Larry Ellison, and others. However, there have been no announcements or posts from them, as yet.
Although Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg and his doctor wife Priscilla Chan do not have a home in Maui, they own land in Hawaii. Chan announced on Facebook that the couple had donated to the Hawaii Community Foundation and requested others to follow suit.
Other celebrity stars who lived in or have links with Hawaii including former president Barack Obama, Jason Momoa, Betty Middler, Pierce Brosnan and his wife Keely, Bette Midler and others. They have posted links to local foundations where they have contributed as well as to the Hawaii/Maui Community Foundation.
