Celebrity comedian Dave Chappelle will be hosting Saturday Night Live (SNL) this Sunday. It has been a couple of years since he hosted the popular show. In the meantime, he has faced flak for his insensitive comments on the transgender community, in a Netflix show. This led to reports that writers at SNL were boycotting his show. The rumors of the boycott report could be due to the fact that the SNL crew has a non binary cast member and one or more transgender writers.
One writer from SNL called Celeste Yim had reportedly posted an Instagram story that said, “I’m trans and non-binary. I use they/them pronouns. Transphobia is murder and it should be condemned.”
The post said nothing about a boycott. However, it is not known if Celeste was present at any of the meetings between comedian Dave Chappelle and the SNL staff at 30 Rock, on Tuesday.
A rep for Dave Chappelle told TMZ that the comedian has not been boycotted. In fact, he has started on the third day, meeting SNL staff and cast. His team says that there has been absolutely no such thing as a boycott related to his past issues.
Dave Chappelle has hosted SNL twice: in 2016 and 2020. His show was the first one after Trump was elected and he said that America should give Donald Trump a chance. However, he later realized that he was way off and admitted it.
Dave Chappelle also appeared in a a controversial Netflix special titled “The Closer.” He passed many jokes that were deemed as transphobic and it created a lot of controversy but Netflix went ahead with the special.
NBC has not as yet responded when asked on comment about the SNL boycott.
