Celebrity actress, singer, and writer Bella Thorne had been a victim of a cyber-attack in June 2019. British hacker Joseph O’Connor, known for his cyber-assaults on several celebrities, including Thorne, was arrested two years later on charges of hacking, cyberstalking, and extortion of over 130 social media accounts.
O’Connor, to be sentenced today, has pleaded with a US judge not to send him to jail. O’Connor, who also admitted to conspiring to steal thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency, wrote a letter to Judge Jed Rakoff expressing his remorse and newfound understanding of the seriousness of his crimes. In the letter, he acknowledged his past actions as a “self-indulgent, impulsive idiot” and described the consequences of his lifestyle, such as weight gain, back injuries, and a reclusive existence.
The 24-year-old, who shuttled between Liverpool and Spain, was extradited to the United States in April after spending time in a Malaga prison. While awaiting sentencing, O’Connor wrote the letter, appealing for leniency and expressing his desire to lead a productive life moving forward.

Prosecutors have accused O’Connor of sharing explicit photos he discovered with others. They allege that he then used Thorne’s social media platforms to promote his own accounts, threatening to release the photos unless a certain number of people followed him. Thorne defiantly posted the images herself and alerted the FBI to the situation.
O’Connor’s lawyers argue that his involvement in the hacking of various social media accounts, including those of Joe Biden, Elon Musk, and Kanye West, was peripheral. They claim that he was approached by other hackers to purchase compromised accounts but ultimately did not go through with the transactions.
Prosecutors are seeking a seven-year prison sentence for O’Connor. The celebrity, who previously expressed her gratitude to the FBI for apprehending O’Connor, has been vocal about the impact his actions had on her life and the lives of others.
As the court prepares to determine O’Connor’s fate, the letter he penned to the judge highlights his acknowledgement of the seriousness of his crimes and his plea for a chance to turn his life around. Whether the judge will grant leniency remains to be seen.
