Celebrity actress Natalie Portman is remembered as the slender swan Nina in Black Swan. Now, the lithe and petite actress will be seen in the opposite end of the weight spectrum. She recently said that she had been asked to bulk up in her role as Jane in the movie Thor: Love and Thunder, which is scheduled to premier on July 8.
Although she appeared as a brilliant astrophysicist in the 2011 film Thor and the 2013 film, Thor: The Dark World, her role was limited. However, her role has changed in the latest film Thor: Love and Thunder directed by Taika Waititi.
The 41-year old celebrity actress will not only be playing the role of The Mighty Thor, a superhero in her own right but will also face celebrity actor Chris Hemsworth’s Thor almost toe-to-toe and eye-to-eye. Jane’s persona changes in the film after she gets possession of Mjolnir, which is a mystical hammer.
In a breakfast interview with Variety, Natalie Portman said, “On ‘Black Swan’ I was asked to get as small as possible. Here, I was asked to get as big as possible. That’s an amazing challenge–and also state of mind as a woman.”
Portman worked with a trainer for almost a year before and during the shooting of Thor: Love and Thunder. She had to build a physique similar to the ripped comic book shape and concentrated on bulking shoulders and arms. Leaked photos drove the internet into a frenzy as they came to terms with her toned and buff body.
Portman also said, “To have this reaction and be seen as big, you realize, Oh this must be so different, to walk through the world like this.”
Portman is now back to normal size and is shooting for a series called “Lady in the Lake” which will be streamed on Apple TV+. She is also a full time producer as well as the co-founder of Angel City Football Club. The LA based club debuted its first season in April.
Thor: Love and Thunder has been a game changing role for the celebrity, petite actress, both professionally and personally. She said that her five-year old and ten-year old were so enamored by her role in the film as they thought it was cool to see her dressed in a cape. Natalie Portman said that they were like, “Please go to work!” She added that usually it was “quite the opposite.”
