Melissa Barrera has been ousted from the lineup of Scream 7 after expressing public support for Palestine on her social media platforms.
The Mexican-born actress, renowned for her role in Jon M. Chu’s In the Heights, initially joined the Scream film series in 2022 as the protagonist, Sam Carpenter, Tara Carpenter’s estranged older sister, portrayed by Jenna Ortega. Having reprised her character in the Scream 6 sequel, Barrera was initially set to return for the upcoming Scream 7. However, on November 21, 2023, Variety reported that Spyglass Media Group, the production company overseeing Scream, had decided to remove her from the cast.
According to a statement provided to Variety in response to the termination of Melissa Barrera’s involvement, a spokesperson for Spyglass clarified that her dismissal was not a result of her endorsement of Palestine. Instead, they cited concerns that her social media posts could be construed as antisemitic, leading to her removal from the project.

Variety was the first to post the news. “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech,” a Spyglass spokesperson tells Variety.
The LA Times reported, “Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp,” she wrote in one post on Instagram stories that was cited by the Hollywood Reporter, which earlier reported Barrera’s exit from Scream VII. “Cornering everyone together, with nowhere to go, no electricity no water … People have learnt nothing from our histories. And just like our history, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING.”
