According to law authorities and the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, a senior cleric who was renowned for having “a heart for the underprivileged” was fatally shot on Saturday. David O’Connell, an auxiliary bishop for the Los Angeles Archdiocese, was slain, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said it was looking for “those responsible” for his death on Sunday.

Authorities revealed around 1 pm on Saturday, they were called to David O’Connell’s four-bedroom home in the Hacienda Heights neighborhood, where they discovered him with a gunshot wound on his upper torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A statement by the Sheriff’s Department termed it as a “senseless murder” of a guiding light and that his “legacy will continue to live on through the community that he helped build.”

As of Sunday afternoon, no one had been arrested in connection with the slaying, and a reason for it was not known. There was no danger to the general public, according to deputy sheriff Lizette Falcon. She opted not to say whether O’Connell was killed inside a house.
O’Connell’s death was ruled a homicide by law enforcement, according to Archbishop of Los Angeles José H. Gomez, who stated Sunday that his office was very troubled and grieved by this finding. O’Connell spent 45 years working for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and was hailed as “a man of deep prayer” and “a peacemaker,” according to Gomez.

According to the diocese’s news website Angelus News, O’Connell was born in County Cork, Ireland, and was ordained in the Los Angeles Archdiocese in 1979. O’Connell was appointed an assistant bishop by Pope Francis in 2015. O’Connell served as a pastor for a number of churches in and around Los Angeles over the years. Many of his congregation members were immigrants and members of minorities, and he worked on initiatives to reduce violence in the city.

Together with supporting neighborhood rebuilding initiatives, O’Connell worked to rebuild law enforcement and citizen trust in the city. He and other local religious leaders assisted in setting up conversations and chances for rapprochement with police officers in people’s homes.
