Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau announced that they have separated. Their joint statement was posted on social media on Wednesday. They were married for 18 years. The prime minister’s office also released a statement that said that both of them had signed a legal separation agreement. They have asked for respect for their privacy.
PM Trudeau’s office released a statement that said, “They remain a close family, and Sophie and the prime minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment. The family will be together on vacation, beginning next week.”
The couple also released a joint statement on social media where they said that they made the decision to separate after a series of “meaningful and difficult conversations.”
Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire met when they were children. She studied with his younger brother Michel. They co-hosted a charity event when they were adults, in 2003. They got married two years later. They have three children: Xavier who is 15 years old, Ella-Grace who is 14 years old and Hadrien who is 9 years old.
Justin Trudeau is in his third term as the Prime Minister of Canada. Sophie Gregoire has been a model and TV host. The couple had celebrity power. They have been seen together recently for Canada Day as well as at King Charles III coronation, in May.
In April Justin Trudeau posted a loving message for his wife Sophie on her birthday. He also posted a meaningful message for both his wife and his mother on Mother’s Day. In June, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau also posted a message praising husband Justin Trudeau.
In July, Sophie Trudeau was not seen with husband Justin Trudeau in public events including a recent cabinet reshuffle, days ago. She didn’t attend the dinner for NATO leaders and their spouses that was held in Vilnius, Lithuania, on July 11.
