Did you know that our fingernails can indicate how healthy we are? Underlying problems in fingernails can be warning symptoms of several conditions including anaemia and now a doctor said that certain changes to fingernails may be a sign of lung cancer. Lung cancer is the most common cancer that leads to the largest number of deaths across the world.
Speaking to the New York Post Dr Davood Johari, a pulmonary and critical care attending physician at NYC Health + Hospitals/King’s County recently shed light on how fingernail changes could be a symptom of lung cancer.
He said, “Fingertips appear wider and rounder than normal, with the nails curving downwards, resembling an upside-down spoon.”

Dr Johari added, “The nail bed, the area under the nail, feels spongy and softer. The fingertip might be red or feel warmer than usual.”
There is a lot of research on lung cancer as it is considered the most fatal of all cancers and scientists keep looking for unusual symptoms that can perhaps indicate the possibility of the cancer so more lives may be saved.

Some of general symptoms include a cough that doesn’t go away, chest pain, hoarseness in voice, shortness in breath and wheezing. Coughing up even a small amount of blood is also a symptom.

Generally lung cancer is often diagnosed when the cancer reaches an advanced stage leading to loss of many lives. Atypical symptoms may decrease the fatal rate and hence there is a lot of research on the disease to improve the cure rate.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of deaths due to cancer across the world. Cigarette smoking is the main reason why many get the cancer though some people who have never smoked also get lung cancer. Second hand smoke exposure also causes lung problems though it is not necessary that it is always cancer.
Some of the causes of lung cancer include smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke, family history of the disease, previous radiation therapy, exposure to radon gas as well as exposure to carcinogens that are substances that cause cancer.
