CALLOFDUTY News: Wolves rally to win Call of Duty Mobile World Championship title

Wolves overcame a pair of early deficits to top GodLike 4-2 on Sunday in the final of the Call of Duty Mobile World Championship in Atlanta.

After falling 250-186 on Takeoff Hardpoint, Wolves knotted things at 1 by prevailing 7-2 on Firing Range Search and Destroy. GodLike moved back in front, though, taking Standoff Control 3-2 to pull themselves within two victories of a title.

But that was the closest GodLike would get.

Wolves dominated the rest of the way, besting GodLike on Hacienda Hardpoint (250-186), Tunisia Search and Destroy (7-1) and Raid Control (3-2) to take home the first-place prize of $400,000.

Sixteen teams participated in the $1 million event, which featured a Swiss Stage in which squads were randomly paired in the first round before going up against each other based on seeding over the next four rounds. That seeding was determined by win-loss record.

The eight teams that reached three wins in the Swiss Stage moved on to the playoffs, while the eight that recorded three losses were eliminated. All matches in the event’s opening stage were best-of-three.

Playoffs began on Saturday with the quarterfinals. The semifinals and grand final were held Sunday. While the final was best-of-seven, all other playoff matches were best-of-five.

In order to reach the grand final, Wolves had to get past Qing Jiu Club in the semis Sunday, and they did so with ease. Wolves captured a 3-0 sweep by winning 250-204 on Takeoff Hardpoint, 7-5 on Meltdown Search and Destroy and 3-1 on Raid Control.

Meanwhile, GodLike had a tougher time against Luminosity Gaming, who, much like GodLike did in the final, jumped out to a 2-1 advantage before letting things slip away. GodLike wrapped up a 3-2 triumph with back-to-back victories on Hacienda Hardpoint (250-242) and Meltdown Seach and Destroy (7-0) to oust LG and punch their ticket to the final.

Xu “NIAN” Ruijie of China, a member of Wolves, was named tournament MVP.

Call of Duty Mobile World Championship payouts and final standings:
1. $400,000 — Wolves
2. $170,000 — GodLike
3-4. $80,000 — Luminosity Gaming, Qing Jiu Club
5-8. $40,000 — Kagendra, Stand Point Gaming, PowerHouse International, Tribe Gaming
9-11. $20,000 — Exclusive, TLE Esports, VOLT
12-14. $12,000 — Team Mayhem, KingsClan, Loops
15-16. $7,000 — iNCO Gaming, Team Vitality
