CALLOFDUTY News: Guerrillas upset Ultra in first round of CDL Stage 4 Major

The Los Angeles Guerrillas upset the No. 1-seeded Toronto Ultra 3-1 in the first round of the Call of Duty League’s Stage 4 Major on Thursday in Burbank, Calif.

The Guerrillas won 250-154 on Hardpoint Karachi and 6-4 on Search and Destroy 6 Star but the Ultra responded with a 3-0 win on Control Highrise. The Guerrillas made sure there wouldn’t be a comeback, taking Hardpoint 6 Star 250-221.

The tournament, which ends Sunday, is a double-elimination format, with all matches best-of-five until the grand final, which is best-of-seven. The winner will get 100 CDL points and $150,000 of the $375,000 prize pool, while the runner-up will come away with 75 CDL points and $90,000.

In other action Thursday, the Seattle Surge won a back-and-forth match against the Vegas Legion. The Legion jumped out in front with a 250-244 victory on Hardpoint Karachi, but the Surge responded with a 6-3 win on Search and Destroy Karachi. The Legion regained the lead with a 3-2 win on Control Invasion, but the Surge won the next two to take the victory, winning 250-161 on Hardpoint Rio and 6-5 on Search and Destroy 6 Star.

The Atlanta FaZe had a much easier time against the New York Subliners, rolling to a 3-0 sweep. The FaZe won 250-211 on Hardpoint 6 Star, 6-2 on Search and Destroy 6 Star and 3-1 on Control Invasion.

The Los Angeles Thieves took the early lead over the Miami Heretics, winning 250-149 on Hardpoint Rio and 6-4 on Search and Destroy Invasion. The Heretics avoided the sweep with a 3-2 win on Control Highrise, but the Thieves put them away with a 250-245 victory on Hardpoint Karachi.

There are five matches Friday, all of which are in the losers’ bracket:
